Arabic Language Instruction Flagship at Michigan State University

The Arabic Language Instruction Flagship (ALIF) program at Michigan State University is part of the national Language Flagship. The Language Flagship leads the nation in designing, supporting, and implementing a new paradigm for advanced language education. Through an innovative partnership among the federal government, education, and business, The Language Flagship seeks to graduate students who will take their place among the next generation of global professionals, commanding a superior level of fluency in one of many languages critical to U.S. competitiveness and security.

The ALIF program at Michigan State University is a unique language learning opportunity for undergraduate students interested in developing superior-level proficiency in Arabic. Students major in a subject of their choice while completing specialized coursework in Arabic language and culture through the four years of their college experience, developing the language skills necessary to function professionally in Arabic. Students of all different proficiency levels will follow personalized study plans consisting of traditional language courses complemented by co-curricular activities, personalized tutoring and study abroad.

We have also partnered with the Dearborn Public School District to develop a national K-12 model for Arabic foreign language instruction that flows smoothly across all grades and builds on previous learning. The Dearborn schools integrate Arabic language learning with school learning from kindergarten through high school, and students graduate with excellent communication and intercultural skills, ready to continue their Arabic studies in higher education.
