ALIF students traveled to the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, MI and also visited two famous Middle Eastern bakeries, New Yasmeen Bakery and Shatila Bakery.
Every Thursday at 5:30 in the International Center, Arabic language students and native Arabic speaking students come together for student-led discussions on various topics, from what is like to study or live in Arab-speaking country, to a discussion on the Arab-American community in Dearborn. It is great opportunity for students to practice speaking in Arabic, learn more each other's culture, and make some new friends.
On Thursday, February 26th, the ALIF program hosted guest speaker Dr. Mohammad Eissa, from the University of Chicago, to give a lecture on "Understanding Humor, Writing and Culture in Arabic Literature as it relates to the Egyptian Dialect." He entertained students with Egyptian jokes, cartoons, commercials, and short stories, and broadened their understanding of the importance of humor in Egyptian society.
On Friday, November 14th, visitors from the State Department visited MSU. This event provided a forum for both State Department Arabic Speakers and MSU ALIF students to practice their Arabic, and ALIF students were also able to learn about opportunities for using Arabic in their professional careers.
On Tuesday, October 14, the Arabic Language Instruction Flagship (ALIF) Program at MSU hosted the internationally acclaimed Iraqi poet, Adnan al-Sayegh, to give a poetry reading to Arabic language students in Wells Hall. (Read more..)
On March 24th, 2008, the ALIF program hosted guest speaker, Father Mina Essak, of the St. Mark Coptic Church in Troy, MI to give a lecture on the history of the Coptic Church.
On March 15th, 2008, ALIF students traveled to the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, MI and also visited two famous Middle Eastern bakeries, New Yasmeen Bakery and Shatila Bakery.
On Monday, February 11th, 2008, ALIF students, faculty, and staff enjoyed a time of eating and socializing together at a potluck dinner. Students got a chance to sample a variety of Middle Eastern dishes, and the faculty entertained everyone with Arabic songs, poems, and jokes.
On October 27th, 2007, ALIF scholars traveled to the Detroit Opera House to hear the music of the legendary Egyptian singer Umm Kulthoum.
